Clinical Pathology

Justin Cole, MD, PHD is a pathologist at Compass Oncology, specializing in benign and malignant hematologic disorders as well as in the molecular techniques utilized to provide diatnostic, prognostic, and predictive information in hematolymphoid.  He rarely has a chance to meet his patients face-to-face, but has chosen to work in a group which is multidisciplinary, community-oriented, and focused upon cancer care so he can be as close to the 'bedside' as is possible for most pathologists.

It is very important to him to be as intimately connected to the patients he helps care for as possible; this includes performing a comprehensive chart review and a clinical consultation in basically ever report he generates, from simple studies like serum protein electrophoresis to much more complex tests such as cell receptor gene rearrangement analysis by highly multiplex PCR.  He tends to err on the side of being thorough / meticulous even if this occasionally means it takes a bit longer to review and report any given study because he recognizes the significant medical decision making (i.e. often involving chemotherapy administration) which will be based upon his diagnostic impressions and interpretation.

He primarily enjoys being with his wife and children when he is away from work, but never looks away from the chance to try a new local beer, get in something that goes fast (motorcycles, modified cars, roller coasters) or to root on his predictably terrible hometown Atlanta Falcons.  After growing up in Georgia, he was fortunate to attend Williams College in Massachusetts as an undergraduate in order to experience life in the Northeast  He then had the opportunity to return home before later sampling both the Pacific Northwest (twice!) and Los Angeles while working at Cedars-Sinai as a young attending physician.

Dr. Cole received his MD from Emory University School of Medicine in Atlanta, Georgia and his PhD in Biochemistry, Cell and Developmental Biology was achieved from the Graduate Divison of Biological and Biomedical Sciences at the same university.  He is Board Certified in Clinical Pathology, Hematopathology, and Molecular/Genetic Pathology.
